T 01/12: Introduction; Milton's sonnet "Avenge, O Lord, thy slaughter'd saints"

T 02/02: Film: The Elephant Man

Th 02/04:  Quiz on Tuesday's installment of The Elephant Man; film concluded;  discussion.  This week's journal pages are due.  Since there will be no outside reading assigned, the journal entries will have to be of the reflective sort, written after you see the film on Tuesday.  No entries will be required for Thursday, and there will be a total of only four points for this week.

T 02/09: Frankenstein: Chapter 6 and Chapter 7See study materials.

Th 02/11:  Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 9-12. See study materials. A videotape about Mark Twain was begun, and this website will introduce you to the material in it.

T 02/23: Frankenstein: Chapter 10 and Chapter 11See study materials.  Click here to read about the Shelleys' visit to the glacier at Chamounix.  Review for midterm exam; Bring to class three essay questions (not the answers) that you think might serve on the exam. These will be worth up to 4 homework points apiece.

Th 02/25: Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 17-22. See study materials.  Please note that the assignments and consequently the study questions have changed, but if your browser has cached the bulletin board pages, you will not see the changes unless you refresh the screen.  This maneuver is done by clicking on a little circular arrow in the toolbar or perhaps by a Control-r or Command-r command, depending on the browser and the kind of computer you use.  See Suggestions for Writing.

Note:  I was mistaken about the poem quoted in Chapter 10 of Frankenstein.  It is from Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Mutability."  It was published in  1816, the same year as Frankenstein.

T 03/02:   Frankenstein: Preface (by Percy Shelley) and Author's IntroductionSee study materials. Take-home Midterm Examination is due.  Click here to see the exam.   You may wish to read model answers to the homework question about the merits of Huck's lie to the ferryboat captain.  These would serve as exam essays if the homework question had been an exam question.

Other Material

Course Evaluation and Review for Final Exam.  As before, bring in three questions that might serve on a comprehensive essay exam. If they are good enough, they may appear on the exam, and in any case you can earn up to four homework points on them.
